My client is a multi-disciplinary consultancy who currently have a vacancy for a senior / principal geotechnical engineer who wishes to work on a variety of projects including national scale coastal and fluvial defence schemes, ports, harbour and bridge design. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and/or support to civil/structural engineering projects within fluvial, tidal and coastal environments, including major Flood and Coastal Risk Management schemes. This role is pivotal to the delivery of a range of engineering and environmental improvement projects, including options appraisal, concept design and detailed scheme design. The post will involve leading and/or supporting geotechnical design and delivery of a variety of projects and will include guiding and mentoring more junior Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists. You will also undertake site works and input to bid and tender preparation

The Position

The post will involve leading geotechnical design and delivery of a variety of projects, mentoring junior engineers and reporting to the Structures Engineering Technical Director.

It is essential that you have experience working in engineering consultancy. You will have expertise in the investigation and design of earthworks, retaining walls and foundations. You must be able to scope, organise and supervise ground investigations and carry out geotechnical analysis and design to Eurocodes. You must be familiar with the CDM Regulations and their application within a design environment. The role will include the mentoring of junior geotechnical engineers and therefore good communication skills are essential.

Key competencies required for the role:

Excellent report writing and effective communication skills are therefore essential to this role. Candidates should have a sound appreciation for engineering principles and good analytical skills for problem solving. Self-motivation and a high degree of organisation are also considered key attributes.

A valid UK driving license and willingness to travel to sites and other offices are essential.

Qualifications and Experience:

An undergraduate degree in engineering geology or geotechnics is essential. An MSc / MEng in a related discipline would be advantageous.

Expertise with respect to the following core skills is expected:

  • Geotechnical engineering design
  • Geotechnical analysis and design to Eurocodes
  • Earthworks, retaining walls and foundations
  • Application of CDM Regulations in a design and ground investigation environment
  • Scope, organise and supervise ground investigations
  • Mentoring of junior staff
  • Experience in the design of maritime specific foundations such as ground anchored sheet piles and laterally loaded piles would be beneficial.

Previous professional experience within a consultancy environment is essential. Successful candidates will be required to demonstrate and evidence, a proven track record in the following:

  • Leading and QA of geotechnical engineering analysis and design
  • Leading and mentoring junior engineers
  • Project Management
