Civil Infrastructure Design Engineer
Wakefield

This opportunity sits within a progressive Engineering Consultancy that has been operating for more than a decade, delivering high-quality civil, structural and infrastructure design services to clients across the UK. The company is founded on a commitment to technical excellence, sustainability and responsive client service, supporting projects from initial feasibility through to design, planning advice, construction support and inspection. It works across a broad range of sectors, including utilities, water, commercial and industrial developments, retail and leisure facilities, public sector infrastructure and residential schemes. By offering integrated multi-disciplinary services covering civil engineering, structural design, drainage, highways, flood risk assessment, geotechnical advice and temporary works, the consultancy provides complete solutions without the need for multiple external providers. A defining feature of the business is its focus on resilient, sustainable and cost-efficient design, with every project approached with commercial awareness, technical precision and a commitment to long-term value.

The Civil Infrastructure Design Engineer will report to a Senior Engineer or Project Manager and will hold responsibility for producing resilient, compliant and sustainable design solutions. The purpose of the role is to ensure that civil infrastructure is planned, designed and delivered to the highest professional standards, in full alignment with statutory requirements and client expectations.

Duties will include both designing and draughting on civil engineering projects, ensuring that concepts are developed into fully detailed and coordinated design packages. The Engineer will undertake technical calculations, prepare engineering drawings, produce three-dimensional models, and develop detailed construction documentation. They will be expected to apply design codes and standards, incorporate geotechnical data and site investigations into their work, and generate accurate, well-presented outputs suitable for client approval and contractor use. In addition to new design, the role will involve the modification of existing schemes, the preparation of options for feasibility studies, and the production of drawings and details to support planning applications and statutory submissions.

The Engineer will work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines such as structural design, geotechnical analysis, planning and temporary works. They will also liaise with clients, approving authorities and other stakeholders to secure necessary approvals and ensure that all requirements are met. The role demands clear communication of professional advice, effective management of time and resources, and an awareness of commercial constraints so that designs remain practical, efficient and cost-conscious.

Candidates should hold a degree in Civil Engineering or a related field and be chartered, or actively working towards chartership, with a relevant professional body. They should have proven experience in civil infrastructure design and draughting, covering areas such as foundation and drainage design, highways engineering and flood risk assessment, combined with a strong knowledge of current design standards, building regulations and planning requirements. Proficiency in industry software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D and MicroDrainage is required, together with the ability to produce well-structured written reports and clearly presented design documentation.

The role requires an Engineer with excellent communication skills who can operate both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. They should be capable of mentoring junior colleagues where appropriate, committed to continuous professional development and able to demonstrate innovation in problem-solving. A focus on sustainable design, a collaborative working style and a commitment to delivering outstanding service will be highly regarded.

This position offers exposure to a wide variety of projects across multiple sectors. It provides the opportunity to contribute to both large and small-scale developments, to engage directly with clients, and to play a central role in shaping infrastructure that is efficient, resilient and sustainable.
