Building Surveyor (STE5)
Location: Various sites around Anglia
Employment Type: Self-employed / Contract - 6 Month Contract
Role Summary
This role involves undertaking detailed inspections and condition assessments of operational railway buildings and platforms across Anglia. Working under STE5 competency, the Building Surveyor will be responsible for identifying structural defects, reporting on asset condition, and supporting maintenance planning in line with national rail standards. The work will contribute directly to the safety, compliance, and longevity of key infrastructure assets.
Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out scheduled and reactive inspections of stations, platforms, shelters, footbridges, and lineside buildings.
  • Undertake platform edge, canopy, and structural assessments, including monitoring for movement, deterioration, and safety risks.
  • Conduct visual and detailed surveys in accordance with NR/L3/CIV/006 and related standards.
  • Produce clear, technically sound reports with photographic evidence and prioritised recommendations.
  • Input findings into asset management systems and escalate critical defects promptly.
  • Act as Responsible Person on Site (RPOS) or Task Supervisor (TS) when required.
  • Participate in emergency response inspections, including post-incident assessments and bridge strike examinations.
  • Liaise with project managers and engineers to support remedial works and asset lifecycle planning.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to continuous improvement of inspection practices.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • STE5 certified with demonstrable experience in building and platform inspections.
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in building surveying, civil engineering, or asset inspection.
  • Strong understanding of building pathology, platform construction, and structural behaviour.
  • Familiarity with CDM regulations and railway safety procedures.
  • Competent in technical report writing and use of asset data systems.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across Anglia.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with confined space and working at height protocols.
  • Awareness of asbestos management and operational railway environments.
  • Ability to work independently and manage inspection schedules efficiently.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
