Civil Engineer (Highways & Drainage)
Gateshead

A privately owned consultancy in the North East is seeking a Civil Engineer to take technical control of the civil engineering aspects of small, medium and large projects, reporting to the Directors. The practice delivers the full project lifecycle-from feasibility and appraisal through planning, detailed design, construction and operation-across residential, commercial/retail, industrial, student accommodation, sport and leisure, education and heritage sectors.

This is a client-facing role in which you will represent the practice professionally, manage a varied personal workload and run multiple projects concurrently. You will produce drawings and construction details in AutoCAD, supervise technicians through the design process and support the administration of projects. Day to day, you will liaise with architects, clients and other professionals, contribute to robust solutions to design challenges, ensure designs meet required standards under the company's Quality Management System, attend internal and external design reviews, and undertake site visits to monitor progress against specification, reporting issues to contractors, clients and project managers as necessary.

Your technical scope will include delivering residential designs to Local Authority and Water Authority standards; remaining conversant with current Building Regulations and familiar with NHBC and LABC requirements; producing adoptable roads and sewer designs to Sections 38, 104 and 278; and preparing private levels and drainage designs for residential, commercial and industrial developments. You will also prepare engineering support for planning applications, including Flood Risk Assessments, utility assessments and site viability reports.

You will hold a relevant degree in Civil Engineering and bring proven experience in a consultancy environment. Proficiency with AutoCAD is essential, alongside capability with civil engineering design packages such as Site 3D, MicroDrainage and/or Causeway Flow. A strong, fundamental understanding of road geometry, levels and drainage design, and working knowledge of approval processes for Highways (Sections 38 and 278) and Water Authority (Section 104) agreements are required. Excellent communication skills, the ability to build client relationships and a commitment to mentoring less experienced staff are key.

You will be joining a friendly, professional team with a strong pipeline of work and a clear commitment to quality, innovation and engineering excellence, with structured development and genuine opportunities for progression.
