Technical Director - High Voltage (HV) Engineering

Salary: £80,000 - £100,000

Location: Fully flexible across the UK

Security: SC Clearance (or ability to obtain) essential

Overview

An established engineering consultancy is seeking a High Voltage (HV) Technical Director / Associate Director to lead and strengthen their HV design capability. This hire represents a strategic opportunity to bring in a technically strong leader who can provide hands-on delivery support and guidance to an existing team of engineers.

This role is ideal for someone who is technically exceptional, enjoys complex design delivery, and wants to support and mentor a growing HV engineering function-without the pressure of work-winning or BD targets.

The team works almost exclusively on private-sector projects, delivering a wide range of electrical infrastructure solutions across industries including healthcare, industrial facilities, renewable energy, energy transition, and mission-critical estates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver detailed RIBA Stage-4 HV designs up to 33 kV, including calculations, protection coordination, modelling, and technical assurance.
  • Produce and review HV system documentation such as SLDs, fault studies, load flow analysis, and protection philosophies.
  • Carry out HV network modelling and analysis using ETAP (essential).
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentoring to engineers at senior and principal level.
  • Support the wider team with project delivery, technical problem-solving, and quality assurance across electrical design packages.
  • Develop specifications for HV substations, switchgear, transformers, earthing systems, and associated protection schemes.
  • Contribute to resilient electrical system design, including redundancy strategies (e.g., N+1, 2N architectures).
  • Advise on private HV network connections, grid interfaces, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Support decarbonisation, electrification, and resilience upgrades across private networks.

Note: This is a delivery and technical leadership role-no expectation for business development or bringing in work although it would be a bonus.

Role Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) - mandatory.
  • Extensive experience in HV design up to 33 kV, with strong technical capability at detailed design (RIBA Stage-4).
  • Proficiency with ETAP for modelling, coordination, and system studies - essential.
  • Strong experience producing calculations, performing protection studies, fault analysis, load flow studies, and earthing design.
  • Demonstrable ability to deliver complex HV projects independently while supporting and guiding a team.
  • Experience working within private networks, such as:
  • Healthcare estates decarbonisation
  • Onshore/offshore wind connections
  • Industrial facilities
  • Private HV/LV network upgrades
  • Eligibility for SC Clearance (or existing clearance) - essential.
  • Could suit a current Associate, Associate Director, or Technical Director seeking progression or a more delivery-focused leadership role.

The Opportunity

  • Join at a pivotal moment, filling a critical technical gap in the team.
  • Shape and grow an HV engineering capability with strong organisational backing.
  • Work on a diverse portfolio of private-sector decarbonisation, resilience, and HV infrastructure projects.
  • Flexible UK-wide working-no location constraints.
  • Future opportunity to influence recruitment of Seniors and Principals once the technical lead is in post.
