Principal Infrastructure Engineer

The Opportunity
An established and growing civil engineering consultancy is seeking to appoint a Principal Infrastructure Engineer to take a leading role within their infrastructure design team.
This is a key senior position within the business, offering the opportunity to manage and deliver multiple projects while helping shape engineering strategy and mentoring junior team members. The role would suit an experienced engineer looking to step into, or further develop within, a principal-level position in a supportive consultancy environment.
The Role
You will be responsible for managing, leading, and delivering infrastructure designs across a range of development projects, ensuring schemes are completed on time and within budget.
You will play a central role in agreeing engineering strategies, maintaining technical standards, and liaising with local authorities and stakeholders to secure approvals for adoptable works.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and deliver infrastructure designs across multiple live projects
Agree and implement engineering strategies across schemes
Negotiate technical approvals for adoptable works (S104, S38, S278)
Ensure designs comply with current Codes of Practice and legislation
Maintain effective communication with clients, local authorities, and multidisciplinary design teams
Oversee and review technical outputs including drawings and calculations
Support and mentor junior engineers and technicians
Technical Requirements
Strong working knowledge of:
Highway design and ground modelling
Drainage design and hydraulic modelling, including SuDS
External works and levels design, including Part M compliance
Industry Codes of Practice and Health & Safety legislation
Software experience:
AutoCAD
PDS or XP Site 3D (or similar)
MicroDrainage (WinDes/Flow or similar)
Microsoft Office packages
Experience & Qualifications
Ideally 5-10 years' experience within a consultancy environment
Experience leading projects and managing client relationships
Degree or HNC qualified in Civil Engineering (or similar discipline)
Chartered or working towards Chartership desirable but not essential
