Senior Structural Engineer
Birmingham City Centre

Fancy working on some genuinely interesting Building Structures projects, with the backing of one of the biggest engineering consultancies in the world, without sacrificing your work-life balance?

We're working with a major international engineering consultancy that's looking to appoint a Senior Structural Engineer within its established and highly regarded Birmingham Building Structures team.
This is a business with an outstanding reputation across the engineering industry, delivering everything from major commercial and residential developments through to complex education, defence, energy and transport projects. They're involved in some of the UK's most significant building and infrastructure schemes, and their multidisciplinary approach means there's plenty of opportunity to work on projects that go well beyond traditional structural design.
Their Birmingham office is right in the heart of the city centre, just a short walk from Birmingham New Street station, making it particularly convenient for anyone commuting by train from across the Midlands. They also offer hybrid and flexible working, giving you a good balance between being part of a collaborative office environment and working from home.

Why is this worth considering?
There are plenty of Structural Engineering consultancies out there, but few can offer the same combination of project variety, technical expertise, career development and long-term stability as this business.
You'll be joining an award-winning Building Structures team with a strong pipeline of work across a broad range of sectors. One week you could be working on a major education or commercial development, the next a technically challenging refurbishment, residential scheme or specialist building within the energy or defence sector.
The variety is a real selling point, particularly if you're currently working somewhere where the projects have become a little repetitive.
You'll also have access to an extensive network of Engineers and technical specialists across the UK and internationally. Whether you're looking to develop your expertise in complex structural design, sustainable construction, digital engineering or project leadership, there are people within the business who can help you get there.
Despite the size of the organisation, the Birmingham team offers the opportunity to take genuine ownership of projects, build relationships with clients and have a real influence over the work you're delivering.

It's a particularly attractive move for a Structural Engineer who enjoys the technical side of the job but wants to develop their project management, commercial and leadership experience alongside it.

What will you be doing?
This is a varied Senior Structural Engineer position, combining hands-on design with project delivery, client engagement and supporting more junior members of the team.
You'll take responsibility for delivering building structures projects from initial concept through to construction, working closely with Architects, Contractors and other engineering disciplines.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the structural design and delivery of small to medium-sized building projects, as well as significant elements of larger schemes.
  • Designing structures using steel, reinforced concrete, timber and masonry.
  • Producing and reviewing structural calculations, technical reports, drawings and specifications.
  • Managing project programmes, budgets and technical deliverables.
  • Coordinating with Architects, M&E Engineers, Civil Engineers and other design disciplines.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for clients, contractors and wider project teams.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring Graduate and more junior Structural Engineers.
  • Supporting the delivery of projects in accordance with relevant design standards, BIM requirements and digital design processes.
  • Attending design meetings and providing technical input throughout the construction process.
  • Helping develop existing client relationships and contributing to future project opportunities.

You'll be given the freedom to manage your own workload and take responsibility for decisions, but with the reassurance of having an experienced leadership team and wider technical network behind you.

What are we looking for?
Ideally, you'll already be working at Senior Structural Engineer level within a building structures consultancy, although we'd also be interested in speaking with experienced Structural Engineers who feel ready to take that next step.
You'll need a strong background in the design of building structures, with experience across a range of construction materials and a good understanding of current design standards and Eurocodes.
Experience taking projects from concept through to detailed design and construction is important, along with the confidence to coordinate with other disciplines and communicate directly with clients.
Knowledge of structural analysis software such as Tekla Structural Designer, Robot or similar packages would be beneficial.
Chartered status through IStructE or ICE would be ideal, although Engineers who are actively working towards chartership will also be considered.
More importantly, we're looking for someone who enjoys engineering, takes pride in producing good quality designs and wants to continue developing.
You don't need to have managed a large team or have extensive commercial experience, but you should be comfortable taking ownership of your work and keen to develop those wider responsibilities.

What's on offer?
Joining a business of this size brings some significant advantages, particularly when it comes to career development, benefits and the breadth of opportunities available.
You'll benefit from:

  • Hybrid and flexible working, with a good balance between office and home.
  • Birmingham city centre office, conveniently located close to New Street station.
  • Competitive salary and a comprehensive, flexible benefits package.
  • Flexible holiday arrangements and a strong focus on work-life balance.
  • Access to an award-winning Building Structures team and nationally recognised technical specialists.
  • A varied portfolio of projects across education, commercial, residential, defence, energy and transport.
  • Excellent training, CPD and structured professional development.
  • Support towards ICE or IStructE chartership where required.
  • Opportunities to develop your project management, client-facing and leadership skills.
  • A clear opportunity to progress towards Principal Structural Engineer and beyond as your experience develops.
  • The stability and resources of a major international consultancy, alongside the opportunity to take ownership of your own projects.

Interested?
If you're a Structural Engineer who enjoys working on a variety of building projects and wants to join a business where you'll be supported, challenged and given room to progress, this could be a really good move.
Equally, if you're currently with a smaller consultancy and fancy experiencing the scale, resources and project opportunities that come with a major international practice, it's certainly worth a conversation.
