Senior / Principal Structural Engineer - Associate Progression
Birmingham City Centre

Ready for the next step in your Structural Engineering career, but don't fancy waiting for someone to retire before you get there?

Calibre Search are working with an established, independent multidisciplinary Engineering Consultancy in Birmingham who are looking to appoint an experienced Senior or Principal Structural Engineer to take on a key role within their Birmingham office.
This is a particularly interesting opportunity for someone who enjoys the technical side of Structural Engineering but is also looking to become more involved in managing people, developing client relationships and helping shape the direction of a team.
The business already has an established team of eight Engineers in Birmingham and is looking for someone who can help lead and develop that team, with a genuine pathway towards Associate level from the outset.

And importantly, this isn't a case of waiting for someone else to leave before you can progress.

A bit about the company...
The Consultancy has been established for close to 40 years and has developed an excellent reputation for delivering practical, commercially sensible engineering solutions across the UK.
They offer Structural, Civil, Geotechnical and Transport Engineering services, working across a broad range of sectors including education, healthcare, commercial, industrial, residential, retail and refurbishment.
Their Structural Engineering team is involved in everything from structural surveys, assessments and alterations to existing buildings through to the design and delivery of new-build developments.
They're a business that takes pride in good, straightforward engineering. Rather than overcomplicating things, their focus is on producing technically sound, buildable and cost-effective solutions, and they're looking for someone who shares that approach.

The role
You'll be joining an established Birmingham office, working alongside an experienced management team and taking on a combination of technical, project management and team leadership responsibilities.
You'll still be very much involved in the engineering itself, but with the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibility for the wider team and the commercial side of the business.
Your involvement will include:

  • Leading Structural Engineering projects from initial concept through to construction.
  • Helping manage and develop an established team of eight Engineers, providing technical guidance, mentoring and support.
  • Overseeing project delivery, workloads, programmes and technical quality.
  • Designing and assessing structures across steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber.
  • Undertaking structural inspections and surveys, producing detailed technical reports and recommendations.
  • Working across new-build, refurbishment, alteration and existing building projects.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, architects, contractors and other consultants.
  • Working closely with the Directors to support the continued growth and development of the Birmingham office.

The progression
This is probably the biggest selling point of the opportunity.
The Directors are looking for someone who can develop into an Associate position and become an important part of the Birmingham leadership team.
You'll have the chance to become increasingly involved in managing Engineers, overseeing projects, developing client relationships and contributing to the wider running of the office.
There's a genuine appetite within the business to develop someone into that position, rather than simply offering progression as a possibility several years down the line.
For someone who's already operating at Principal level, or a strong Senior Engineer who's ready to take on more responsibility, there's a real opportunity to make the position your own.

What are they looking for?
Ideally, you'll have around 10 years or more of experience within a Structural Engineering consultancy, although the business is happy to consider someone with slightly less experience if they have the right technical background and leadership potential.
You'll need to be comfortable working across a range of building structures, particularly steel and reinforced concrete, alongside a good understanding of masonry, timber and existing building assessments.
Experience undertaking structural surveys and producing reports would be particularly useful, as would previous involvement in mentoring junior Engineers or coordinating small project teams.
Chartership would be advantageous, although it's not essential, and the business can support someone who is working towards becoming Chartered.
A full UK driving licence is required due to the nature of the projects and occasional site visits.
Above all, they're looking for someone who's technically capable, approachable, commercially aware and interested in developing both themselves and the Engineers around them.

Location and hybrid working
The office is centrally located in Birmingham, within walking distance of New Street Station, with plenty of public parking options nearby.
The business operates a hybrid working arrangement, with three days per week in the Birmingham office and two days working remotely.
They're particularly keen to speak with Engineers who are based in Birmingham or the surrounding areas and are looking for a long-term opportunity without the need for an excessive daily commute.
It's a well-established consultancy with a varied workload, an experienced team already in place and, most importantly, a genuine opportunity to progress into a senior leadership position.

If you're a Senior or Principal Structural Engineer who feels ready for more responsibility, or you're finding that progression within your current business has become a waiting game, I'd be keen to have a conversation.
