Sector: Energy, Defence & Critical Infrastructure

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced Structural Engineer looking to take a leading role on some of the UK's most technically challenging and high-profile infrastructure projects?

We are currently seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to join a leading multidisciplinary engineering practice. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a highly skilled technical team delivering complex projects across the energy, defence, nuclear and critical infrastructure sectors, with opportunities to contribute to major UK and international programmes.

The role offers the opportunity to work across the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to construction and client-side support, while helping to develop innovative and technically robust engineering solutions.

You'll be joining a collaborative environment where technical excellence, professional development and knowledge sharing are strongly encouraged.

The Role

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you will take a leading role in the technical delivery of complex, multidisciplinary projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating and/or managing a team of Structural Engineers delivering technical design packages on complex projects.

  • Providing technical leadership across areas including reinforced concrete, structural steel, foundations and underground structures.

  • Producing and reviewing technical deliverables including design reports, calculations, drawings and scopes of work.

  • Providing technical input into Structural design solutions and ensuring delivery to agreed programmes, budgets and quality standards.

  • Working closely with project managers, clients and other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.

  • Providing technical guidance, mentoring and support to less experienced engineers.

  • Helping to develop and grow Structural engineering capability within the wider team.

  • Working independently with minimal technical guidance and applying sound engineering judgement to complex problems.

  • Supporting bids and technical proposals.

  • Working collaboratively with UK and international teams on multidisciplinary engineering projects.

  • Maintaining high standards of quality assurance, including checking and reviewing your own work and the work of others.

About You

We're looking for a well-rounded and technically strong Structural Engineer who can combine engineering expertise with effective team leadership and client-facing skills.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.

  • Proven experience coordinating or managing Structural engineering design teams within a consultancy environment.

  • Strong experience working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

  • Significant practical experience in reinforced concrete and structural steel design.

  • Strong knowledge of current Eurocodes, relevant design standards and industry best practice, including CDM requirements.

  • The ability to work independently, exercise engineering judgement and provide technical direction to others.

  • Experience with relevant structural analysis and design software such as Tekla, Robot, STAAD or equivalent.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to clients and multidisciplinary teams.

  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to build strong working relationships and contribute to successful project delivery.

Experience within nuclear, defence, energy or other highly regulated infrastructure sectors would be advantageous, although this is not essential.

Experience of dynamic or seismic design would also be beneficial.

What's on Offer?

This is an opportunity to join a technically ambitious engineering environment and work on challenging projects that have a genuine impact on the UK's future infrastructure.

You can expect:

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.

  • Hybrid working arrangements.

  • Opportunities to work on major and technically complex UK and international projects.

  • Structured professional development and training.

  • Opportunities to develop technical and leadership expertise.

  • A collaborative, inclusive working environment.

  • Flexible benefits designed to support health, wellbeing, financial and lifestyle priorities.

  • Excellent long-term career progression opportunities.
