Principal Traffic Signals Engineer

I'm currently working with a well-established transport and infrastructure consultancy looking to appoint a Principal Traffic Signals Engineer to join their growing team in Leicester.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced traffic signals professional who enjoys combining technical delivery, team leadership and client engagement whilst working on a range of high-profile transport projects across the UK.
The Role
As a Principal Traffic Signals Engineer, you'll take a leading role in the delivery of traffic signal and intelligent transport projects for both public and private sector clients. You'll be responsible for managing projects from concept through to implementation whilst mentoring junior engineers and maintaining strong client relationships.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the design and delivery of traffic signal and ITS projects.
- Managing project programmes, budgets, risks and technical quality.
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and technicians.
- Producing and reviewing signal designs, technical reports, specifications and drawings.
- Developing junction improvement schemes including signalised junctions, pedestrian crossings and network optimisation projects.
- Advising clients on traffic signal control strategies, network management and emerging technologies.
- Supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning and post-implementation validation activities.
- Reviewing traffic data and modelling outputs to inform design solutions.
- Working closely with local authorities, developers, contractors and other key stakeholders.
- Promoting innovation, safety, sustainability and best practice across projects.
About You
To be considered, you'll ideally have:
- A degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transport Planning or a related discipline.
- Significant experience within traffic signals, intelligent transport systems or traffic engineering.
- A proven track record delivering complex traffic signal projects.
- Strong knowledge of UK traffic signal design standards, equipment and control methodologies.
- Experience working with local authorities, consultancies, contractors or signal suppliers.
- Proficiency with software such as:
- AutoCAD, KeySIGNALS and KeyLINES.
- LinSig and/or TRANSYT.
- UTC, MOVA and/or SCOOT.
- Experience producing and reviewing technical reports, drawings and scheme documentation.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
- A full UK driving licence.
Professional membership with CIHT, IHE or another relevant institution would be advantageous.
