Senior Structural Engineer
Leeds
A proper technical role, a business that looks after its people, and an office you don't have to battle through Leeds city centre to get to. This one is an employee-owned Consultancy offering hybrid working and the benefit of free parking
There are plenty of Senior Structural Engineer opportunities around, but finding one that offers a good balance between interesting engineering work, genuine responsibility and a decent working environment isn't always straightforward. This one is worth a look.
I'm working with an established, employee-owned engineering consultancy that's looking to bring an experienced Senior Structural Engineer into its Leeds team.
They've been around for over 75 years, have offices across the UK and have built a strong reputation for their work in structural, civil and specialist engineering. Despite their size and history, they've managed to retain a relatively personal approach to how they operate, with a real emphasis on supporting their engineers and developing people internally.
So, what's the actual job?
You'll be joining an Associate-led team where you'll have the opportunity to take ownership of your own projects, work directly with clients and play a part in developing the less experienced engineers around you.
It's a genuinely hands-on engineering position. Yes, there'll be project management, client meetings, budgets and mentoring involved, but they're not looking for someone who wants to move away from design altogether, they want someone who enjoys Structural Engineering.
Someone who's comfortable designing in steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber, can work through complicated technical challenges and understands how to turn a design into something that can actually be built.
You'll be involved in a mixture of new-build and refurbishment work, preparing and checking calculations, specifications and reports, undertaking structural surveys and inspections, and managing projects through the various stages of design and construction.
You'll also have the freedom to manage your own workload and contribute ideas rather than simply following instructions.
What sort of background would suit?
Ideally, you'll have developed your career within a UK building structures consultancy and reached the point where you're comfortable delivering projects with a reasonable degree of independence.
You might already be a Senior Structural Engineer or perhaps you're an experienced Structural Engineer who's been doing much of the senior-level work without the title.
Either way, you'll need a good grounding in structural design, an understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards, and experience working on both new and existing buildings.
You'll be comfortable communicating with architects, contractors and clients, and ideally have some experience guiding Graduate or Intermediate Engineers.
Chartership would be great, but it's not essential. The same goes for experience with SCIA or Tekla Structural Designer.
They're far more interested in finding someone who's technically capable, reliable and keen to develop.
A few things that make the company worth considering...
Firstly, it's employee-owned. That means the people working within the business have a stake in its success, with Employee-Owned Trust bonuses forming part of the overall package.
Secondly, there's a genuine emphasis on flexibility. They offer hybrid working and flexible hours, recognising that people have commitments outside work.
And thirdly, there's a good benefits package to go alongside the opportunity itself.
You'll receive 25 days' annual leave, with additional days for long service and the option to buy or sell holiday. There's private healthcare, a 5% employer pension contribution, performance-related rewards, professional development opportunities and access to electric car and Cycle to Work schemes.
And the Leeds office?
Another positive, particularly if you're commuting from outside the city.
The office is located on the outskirts of Leeds, conveniently positioned just off the motorway network, with free parking on site.
No city-centre traffic, expensive parking or lengthy walk from the train station to worry about.
There will be some travelling to project sites as part of the position, so you'll need a full driving licence and access to your own car, which must be insured for business use if you're successful.
The bottom line...
If you're looking for a Senior Structural Engineer position where you can stay technically involved, take responsibility for your own work and develop your career within a stable, employee-owned consultancy, this could be a really good fit.
It's a business with a long history, a supportive working environment and a genuine interest in retaining and developing its people.
