How UK Infrastructure Projects Are Shaping the Geotechnical Job Market

Demand for geotechnical engineers is strong across the UK, and three types of project are driving most of it: major transport schemes, brownfield regeneration, and water and energy investment. Here's where the demand is coming from and what employers are looking for.

Transport and major civils

Rail and highways schemes remain the biggest single source of geotechnical work. The Lower Thames Crossing started on site in March 2026 with main tunnelling to follow, East West Rail's next phase is in development, and the TransPennine Route Upgrade runs through the rest of the decade. Between them that means ground investigations, settlement and stability assessments, tunnelling support and temporary works design, and it means consultancies competing for engineers who have delivered in major infrastructure environments before. If you have a named scheme on your CV, say so early. It is often the first thing a hiring manager looks for.

Urban regeneration and brownfield

City regeneration is pulling demand towards the geo-environmental end of the discipline. The engineers getting shortlisted on this work combine design capability with contaminated land experience and real site time, and Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessment work is showing up as a requirement on jobs that wouldn't have asked for it three years ago. If that's your background, you're in a smaller pool than you might think.

Energy, water and climate resilience

This is where the money is moving fastest. Ofwat has approved £104 billion of water company investment for 2025 to 2030 under AMP8, and that programme runs alongside Sizewell C, grid upgrades and a growing pipeline of flood defence and coastal protection work. Ground conditions decide the long-term performance of all of it, which is feeding steady demand for ground improvement, earthworks design and long-term performance assessment experience. Engineers who have not worked in water before are getting interviews on the strength of transferable earthworks and foundations work, because the sector cannot staff AMP8 from within.

What this means if you're considering a move

Only 17% of built environment professionals are actively looking right now, so employers on stretched programmes are competing hard for the ones who are. That shows up as salary movement in high-demand regions, more hybrid arrangements than the sector offered five years ago, and faster processes for engineers with the right scheme experience. The candidates in the strongest position can point to delivery on large or complex sites, collaboration with structural and civil teams, and an understanding of construction-phase risk. Chartership, or visible progress towards it, still moves the needle at every level.
