With investment across the water sector showing no signs of slowing down, this is an opportunity to join a nationally recognised urban drainage team working on some of the biggest challenges currently facing the UK water industry.

Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of work, they're looking for a Wastewater Hydraulic Modeller to join their established Asset Planning team in Derby. You'll work alongside hydraulic modellers, engineers, GIS specialists and programmers, delivering projects for major water companies, Local Authorities and developers, with the potential to become involved in international work too.

The projects themselves have a real purpose. The team is helping clients understand and improve the performance of their wastewater networks, developing schemes to reduce flooding within communities, tackle storm overflows and ultimately reduce the impact wastewater infrastructure has on rivers and seas.

Using InfoWorks ICM, you'll develop and interrogate sewer network models to identify deficiencies, understand why problems are occurring and help develop outline solutions. You'll also work with both 1D and 2D modelling to investigate flood risk and flooding mechanisms, alongside analysing operational sewerage data and carrying out root cause analysis.

It's not a purely desk-based modelling position either. You'll get involved in feasibility studies and engineering design, undertake site visits and asset surveys and work directly with clients, contractors, stakeholders and other technical specialists. You'll also contribute to technical reports and wider project deliverables, giving you exposure to projects from the initial investigation through to the development of potential interventions.

They're looking for someone who already has some demonstrable wastewater modelling experience using InfoWorks ICM. Experience with InfoWorks 2D, InfoNet or InfoAsset would be particularly useful, alongside GIS packages such as QGIS, MapInfo or ArcGIS.

A degree in engineering, geography, GIS, science or another relevant discipline would be ideal, although equivalent industry experience will also be considered. More important is a good understanding of the UK water industry, an ability to communicate technical information clearly and the motivation to keep developing your technical knowledge.

If you've already been involved in DWMPs or SOAF, that experience would translate particularly well. Likewise, exposure to FME, Power BI or programming tools such as Python, Ruby or Visual Basic would be beneficial as the team continues to develop more innovative and digital approaches to wastewater asset planning.

There's a strong emphasis on sustainable solutions too. Rather than simply increasing traditional infrastructure, the wider team is looking at how nature-based solutions, better data and smarter modelling can help clients respond to climate change, population growth and increasing environmental pressures.
